 Martell uses both hot and cold metal techniques to create traditional or  whimsical sculpture from steel, brass, bronze, and copper.
  Fire makes the metal pliable.  Martell compares working with hot metal to working with clay, and can forge an infinite variety of shapes.
Repousee can be done hot or cold to achieve texture and objects or scenes in relief, as shown below.

The ceremonial sculpture pictured below was one of three created in collaboration with Bob Rizzo for the Daphne Forago wing of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art.
